Hold and calm a child with croup instead of exposing him/her to steam from a shower or kettle. Treatment with high or low humidity or mist therapy has no observable value. Soothing helps restore normal breathing in children whose croup is moderate to severe. Most croup attacks end within 30 minutes. Exposing the child to cool night air also can be helpful. If a child does not get better within 30 minutes or becomes pale or blue, get emergency help immediately.
