If played too loudly, iPods can cause hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). To protect your hearing, these and other personal stereo devices using earphones should not be audible to anyone standing near you. No matter what sort of earpiece you use, set the volume at about the level of a conversation with someone near you—the music should never get so loud that it causes discomfort and you have to turn down the volume.
