You may know that a good eye exam can reveal more than just your eye health. But did you know that it can detect signs of multiple sclerosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol and Crohn's disease? In a study of insurance claims, 6% of these conditions were first detected by eye doctors.

Why: The eyes contain blood vessels, nerves and other structures that can be affected by chronic illness. If you're over age 40, get an eye exam at least every two years.
