Go barefoot or wear sandals whenever you can. Joints in feet stay properly lubricated when the small bones can move freely, which is not possible in closed shoes. Foot exercises also can keep feet healthy and prevent problems such as hammertoes.

Exercise examples: While sitting down, spread your toes as wide as possible and hold them open for five seconds at a time. This helps prevent muscle weakness that can cause toes to overlap. Lay a dish towel on the floor. Standing on one edge of the towel, scrunch it up inch by inch with your toes. Put some marbles in a wide bowl. Using one foot at a time, pick up the marbles and place them on the side or in another bowl.
