Allergy medications soothe coughs better 6.than over-the-counter (OTC) cough remedies, such as dextromethorphan and guaifenesin. OTC allergy medications, such as those that contain diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine and brompheniramine, help to quiet a cough due to the common cold by drying the secretions in the back of the throat.

Downside: These allergy medications may cause drowsiness as well.

Also helpful for a cough: Pain relievers, such as Advil and Aleve—they may lessen the severity and frequency of the cough by inhibiting chemicals that cause inflammation.
