New herbal insect repellent—oil of lemon eucalyptus—now is on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommended list. But it must be reapplied more often than DEET or Picaridin (frequency depends on the concentration).

Warning: Just one mosquito bite can transmit West Nile virus or other infections. Apply repellent to exposed skin whenever you are outdoors, especially between dusk and dawn.
