An estimated 10 million Americans currently have osteoporosis, and another 34 million are considered to be at risk for the disease. Women are four times more likely than men to develop the condition.

People who have osteoporosis experience low bone mass and a weakening of the bone structure. This can eventually result in debilitating fractures, particularly of the hip, spine and wrist.
