Obese people may be misdiagnosed with asthma. Extra weight makes respiratory muscles work less efficiently, producing symptoms that resemble those of asthma-reduced lung function and shortness of breath. But many obese people show no changes in airway reactivity-a defining characteristic of asthma. If you are obese and have trouble breathing, ask your doctor about testing to confirm an asthma diagnosis.
