Best treatment for snoring depends on the cause. Snoring occurs because of a blockage anywhere from the tip of the nose to the back of the throat.

Common cause: Being overweight. Losing weight should relieve the problem.

Other causes: Deviated septum, sinus infection, floppy uvula (the fleshy lobe that hangs from the back of the soft palate). These may require surgery or, when infection is present, treatment for the infection.

Best: A doctor who looks at the whole patient.
Example: An overweight smoker with allergies who complains of snoring may need to see an allergist, an acupuncturist to help stop smoking and a dietitian for weight loss. If snoring continues, the cause can be narrowed down and treated directly—surgery for a deviated septum, for example.
