Manicures at nail salons can result in infections, allergic reactions and injuries to the nail plate and cuticle.

Self-defense: Bring your own manicure tools. Cuticles should be trimmed, not removed with chemicals. Fingernails should be trimmed and filed in the same shape as toenails—flat tips with rounded corners. Periodically clean manicure tools with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Use nail polish remover only as needed—whenever possible, recoat chips with polish.
