A new cancer treatment is much more effective than radiation. Proton-beam therapy is best for tumors that can't be controlled with low doses of radiation and that are in or near sensitive areas, such as the prostate, chest, lungs and brain. There are proton-beam facilities in California, Florida, Indiana, Massachusetts, Texas and Oklahoma. Treatment costs more than standard radiation but is covered by most insurers.
