Low-back pain can be relieved by antidepressants. A recent review of published studies found that people who experienced chronic low-back pain who took the tricyclic antidepressant nortriptyline (Aventyl) had less pain and needed fewer painkillers than those taking a placebo.

Theory: The analgesic properties of these antidepressants, which inhibit the uptake of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, help relieve back pain.

If you have chronic Low-back pain: Talk to your doctor about adding an antidepressant to your painkiller regimen.
