Some diabetics may be better off not starting insulin, according to Sandeep Vijan, MD. For adults over age 50 who have type 2 diabetes but a low risk for complications because their glucose levels are under control (A1C level of 8% to 8.5%), the side effects of taking a daily insulin shot or other diabetes medications may do more harm than good, a recent study reports. Common side effects such as low blood sugar may be worse than the small benefit of the medication. Diet and exercise may be better for these patients.

Caution: Do not stop taking insulin or other diabetes drugs without first consulting your doctor.
