Statins may help prevent osteoporosis in men.

Recent finding: In a study of more than 91,000 men, those who took a cholesterol-lowering statin had an overall 36% lower risk for fractures.

Theory: Statins improve the function of small blood vessels, which may promote bone growth and remodeling.

If you have high cholesterol: Ask your doctor about taking a statin to lower cholesterol—and to help prevent osteoporosis.
