Food Dangers for Your Dog

Table scraps can harm dogs. Grapes and raisins can cause vomiting, diarrhea and life-threatening kidney failure. Chocolate can be toxic to dogs—the darker the chocolate, the greater the risk. Sugarless gum and candy containing xylitol can cause a rapid drop in a dog's blood sugar, which can result in depression, loss of coordination and seizures. Onions can cause gastrointestinal irritation and anemia and can damage dogs' red blood cells—a single small whole onion can be fatal. Macadamia nuts can cause vomiting, depression, tremors and temporary paralysis of a dog's hind legs—though this usually clears up on its own without lasting effects.
